The New York Guard’s 244th Medical Detachment held their Third Annual Salute to Service Gala on February 11, 2023, at The Davenport Mansion on the Sound Beach Club. The event was attended by guests in military attire and formal wear who were welcomed by the sweet sounds of bagpipes played by the host and event project officer, Major Michael J. Doria, PhD.

The evening began with a premium liquor open bar and hors d’oeuvres passed around for everyone to enjoy. The rooms were decorated in colors that never blend or fade; Red White, and Blue, and the State flag that represents the uniform that the attendees wear; The New York Guard.

The Opening Ceremony was held in the main dining hall and led by the Color Guard, DJ, and flat screens with pictures of soldiers throughout the year of accomplishments. All those that passed were honored in every branch of the military and Captain Christopher Dunbar, PhD, was remembered forever.

The night was filled with awards, speeches, and a special celebration of the retirement of four top leaders: Colonel Armon Imbriglio, PA, Major Richard Gasalberti, MD, Captain Carlisle St Martin, MD, and Captain William J. Vendittelli, DC. These leaders volunteered endless hours to make sure all the soldiers were ready medically to be activated. Their presence in the unit will surely be missed.

When asked for a quote to be remembered by Colonel Imbriglio, PA said, “Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge.” Captain Carlisle St Martin, MD stated, “At the end of the day, what you haven’t finished you can organize and plan to do it tomorrow-Only remember somewhere in the world today is your tomorrow-and yesterday is your today. Work as if today is tomorrow.”

Major Richard Gasalberti, MD said, “The medical unit was forged from the metals, respect, honor, and commitment, this is why we became a solid operational unit with any moment’s notice”.

The remainder of the night was filled with a delicious 4-course dinner and dancing. Every guest went home with a New York Guard medical coin as a gift of appreciation. Major Doria was commended for his attention to detail in organizing the event.

Captain William J. Vendittelli, DC stated, “It was an experience that I will always treasure serving in the NY Guard. Rendering care to my fellow state guard soldiers as the regular National Guard was an honor and privilege.”

The event was not only a celebration of the retirement of four top medical officers, but also a reminder of the sacrifice and commitment of all those in the military who serve their country.
